Characteristics
Previously these species were placed in Panicum. However, it has been found that Coleataenia is much more closely related to Paspalum (tribe Paspaleae) and distant from Panicum s.str. At first, Sorengia was incorrectly established as the genus for this group. Morphological apomorphies remain elusive for Coleataenia.
