The earliest known records of this species in the USA were collected in the late 1800s from Mobile, AL (C. Mohr, MO, UNA), a port area where several exotics are thought to have been introduced. The earliest record in Florida may be from Glades Co. in 1945 (Brass 15017, USF). This species had been segregated into the genus Oxycaryum based on its spirally arranged glumes and dimerous dorsiventrally flattened nutlets. However, these characters are found in other species of Cyperus and DNA data have confirmed the placement of this species in Cyperus (Larridon et al. 2011).
