Although here synonymized, subsp. adhaerens has been recognized by irregularly twisted hairs on the stem and uncinate hairs on the leaves, while subsp. deltoidea has only uncinate hairs on the stem (Herndon 1993). Formerly included in the genus Chamaesyce, this species is reclassified under Euphorbia subg. Chamaesyce sect. Anisophyllum subsect. Hypericifoliae.
