**
This species concept follows Kessler (1987), who treated S. reticularis as a polymorphic species, noting that it "is often difficult to determine where one variety ends and another begins". Material in Florida appears to mostly have pubescent achenes, with some specimens having achenes with only faintly tawny patches. Specimens with pubescent achenes and longer terminal internodes in the inflorescence have been treated as S. muehlenbergii, and those with glabrate achenes and shorter internodes referred to as S. reticularis s.str. (Reznicek et al. in FNA, vol. 23).
