A pantropical species, Ximenia americana is a facultative root parasite, and is able to parasitize a wide range of hosts (DeFilipps 1969; Musselman & Mann, Jr. 1979) like many species of the Santalales order. It may also occasionally form haustoria onto its own roots or on inanimate objects (DeFilipps 1969).
