Woodson (1954) recognized four subspecies and stated "a large part of the species population as a whole consists of the very broad commissures where introgression is extremely active." Subspecies rolfsii occurs nearly throughout Florida and was characterized by leaves typically hastate with usually crispate-revolute margins and "merging" with subsp. interior and subsp. tuberosa (Woodson 1954). Subspecies tuberosa was cited for Duval, Nassau, and Holmes Cos. in Florida by Woodson (1954) and characterized by leaves obovate to oblanceolate, cuneate at the base, and the margins usually flat.
