Trichostema suffrutescens (here provisionally synonymized) has been recognized as having leaves < 2 cm long and endemic to peninsular Florida (Lewis 1945), though T. dichotomum has also been circumscribed to have leaves sometimes shorter than 2 cm long. The distinctiveness of T. setaceum is also subtle. All of these entities are clearly closely related (Huang et al. 2002).
