This account contains P. rigida in synonymy. Nienaber & Thieret (in FNA, vol. 4) noted that P. americana and P. rigida "are not always clearly distinct" and specimens intermediate in morphology can be found sympatric with P. americana s.str. Specimens with shorter fruiting pedicles (<7 mm long) and shorter and erect racemes (<13.5 cm long) have been called P. rigida or P. americana var. rigida.
