This species was recently reinstated and removed from its previous synonymy under S. cernua or S. odorata (Pace & Cameron 2016). Additionally, two names of alleged hybrids (S. x folsomii & S. x itchetuckneensis) have been subsumed into synonymy under S. triloba.
