Genotyping-by-sequencing (Burrell et al. 2015) and ISSR analyses found that sampled populations from Collier and Miami-Dade County were distinct from those sampled from the rest of Florida, consistent with I. brasiliensis being a separate species. However, Imperata brasiliensis has sometimes been considered a synonym of I. cylindrica (Hall 2019), such that only one species or genetic group of Imperata is recognizable in Florida (Lucardi et al. 2014). The earliest records of I. brasliensis in south Florida may be the Chapman s.n. (NY) and Simpson 222 (NY) specimens from the late 1800s. Specimens often show charring in Florida, apparently preferring pyrogenic communities and perhaps having a flowering response to fire.
