Vitis cinerea (Engelm.)Engelm. ex Millardet var. floridana Munson
FLORIDA GRAPE

DNA work intimates this taxon could be recognized as the species V. simpsonii, possibly not closely related to V. cinerea (Wen et al. 2018; Zecca et al. 2020, 2022). This taxon is difficult to separate from V. aestivalis and either may be easily misidentified. Vitis aestivalis is distinguished by its abaxially glaucous leaf blades, more glaucous berries 8-20 mm wide, terete branchlets that are less evenly pubescent, preference for drier habitats, and flowering Apr-Jun vs. V. cinerea with leaf blades not glaucous abaxially, berries not or slightly glaucous 4-8 mm wide, angled branchlets, preference for wetter habitats, and flowering May-Jun (see Moore & Wen in FNA, vol. 12). Several other DNA analyses have looked at various samples of V. aestivalis and V. cinerea (Miller et al. 2013; Wan et al. 2013; Klein et al. 2018).
