An alternate taxonomy regards plants with stronger pubescence around the base of the blade as A. beyrichiana, restricted to SC, GA, AL, MS, and FL, and plants with stronger pubescence on the abaxial portion of the blade as A. stricta s.str, restricted to NC and SC (Peet 1993; Ward 2001). Other work favors treating both entities as one species (Walters et al. 1994; Kesler et al. 2003).
