Okenia, with up to 18 stamens per flower and geocarpic fruits, is possibly sister to the genus Boerhavia (based on ITS and plastid DNA) or embedded in the Boerhavia lineage (based predominantly on plastid DNA) (Douglas & Manos 2007).
