Whittemore et al. (2018) found that F. pauciflora is tetraploid and that F. caroliniana s.str. and F. cubensis are usually diploid; however, taxonomy and morphology of the group may still require clarification. Campbell (2017) noted "there may be an intergrading complex between F. caroliniana (a highly variable taxon) and other species." The leaflet lower surface micro-foveolate-papillose (at 40-100X) with a cuticular reticulum overlaying and obscuring the epidermal surface and stomates, minute glandular peltate scales not evident distinguishes F. pauciflora which occurs south to Osceola Co. (Nesom 2010; Ward 2011).
